Announcement of the People’s Bank of China

【2020】No. 4


The People’s Bank of China is to issue a set of 2020 Auspicious Culture gold and silver commemorative coins on 20th May, 2020. The set consists of 6 coins, including two gold coins,three silver coins, and one gold and silver bimetallic coin. All of them are the legal-tendered coins of the People’s Republic of China.

I. Design of the Coins

i. Obverse Design

Each coin in the whole set bears the common obverse design of the word art of Chinese characters “吉祥” (meaning ‘Auspiciousness’) with Chinese traditional decorative patterns, Country name, and the year of issue.

ii. Reverse Design

The 5g round gold coin depicts patterns of pine tree, crane, ganoderma lucidum, and cloud. The Chinese idiom of “song he yan nian” (pronunciation), often used when wishing people good health and long life,and denomination are on the reverse.


The 100g round silver coin depicts patterns of a crane and pine branches. The Chinese idiom of “song he yan nian”(pronunciation) and denomination are on the reverse.


The 60g round silver coin depicts patterns of a Kylin and a child. The Chinese idiom of “qi lin song zi” (pronunciation), implying people’s strong wish of bearing more children, and denomination are on the reverse.


The 3g heart-shaped gold coin depicts patterns of a bride, lilies, and window lattice. The Chinese idiom of “bai nian hao he” (pronunciation), meaning love for all seasons, and denomination are on the reverse.


The 30g heart-shaped silver coin depicts patterns of lilies and a lovelock. The Chinese idiom of “bai nian hao he”(pronunciation) and denomination are on the reverse.


The 8g gold and 4g silver round bimetallic coin depicts patterns of gold fishes and begonia. The Chinese idiom of “jin yu man tang” (pronunciation), literally meaning gold and jade fill the hall, but here applying a homophonic pun of “jin yu” relating gold fish to gold and jade,implying abundant wealth or many children in the family. The idiom and denomination are on the reverse.


II. Specifications and Mintage of the Coins

The 5g round gold coin, is proof coin, has diameter of 20mm, face value of 80 yuan, 99.9% of fineness and contains 5 grams of pure gold. The maximum mintage is 5000 pieces.


The 100g round silver coin, is proof coin, has diameter of 60mm, face value of 30 yuan, 99.9% of fineness and contains 100 grams of pure silver. The maximum mintage is 10000 pieces.


The 60g round silver coin, is proof coin, has diameter of 40mm, face value of 20 yuan, 99.9% of fineness and contains 60 grams of pure silver. The maximum mintage is 20000 pieces.


The 3g heart-shaped gold coin is proof coin. Side length of the external square is 18mm. The coin has face value of 50 yuan, 99.9% of fineness and contains 3 grams of pure gold. The maximum mintage is 10000 pieces.


The 30g heart-shaped silver coin is proof coin. Side length of the external square is 40mm. The coin has face value of 10 yuan, 99.9% of fineness and contains 30 grams of pure silver. The maximum mintage is 20000 pieces.


The 8g gold and 4g silver round bimetallic coin, is proof coin, has diameter of 30mm, face value of 100 yuan, 99.9% of fineness and contains 8 grams of pure gold and 4 grams of pure silver. The maximum mintage is 5000 pieces.
